CALEB SCHAFTLEIN,
I wanted to depict a woman over 50 who is sexy but also very cool. An artistic, hopefully interesting take on a standard lingerie shoot.
As extravagant as my imagination can be - it is tempered by what is realistic. I shoot in and around my home. My life savings would be gone in a flash if I indulged all my fantastic visions for shoots.
Collaboration is one of the best things about photo shoots. I work with the same people over and over because we share the same vision, taste and -most importantly- enjoy spending time with one another.
It depends on which of my regular collaborators are participating in a project. I shoot very frequently and since I have stepped away from doing hair clients I have a lot more time than my colleagues do- thus I need to have my fingers in everything if I want to get things done.
Retouching has a steep learning curve. I have gotten much better at being satisfied by a lighter hand in this regard. Having said that I am always open to whatever might work with a specific look. The toys are fun to play with!
I think it is a combination of both. Preparation is essential to a successful shoot but those rare spontaneous moments of brilliance that occur within that careful plan are when things crackle with spine tingling pleasure.
The first time a photograph that I took was published in a national hair magazine in the 1990s was pivotal because it validated the quality my work and encouraged me to continue creating imagery.
I love a classic studio setting with a white backdrop. The empty space is always pleasing to me.
I think it is always a challenge to report on current fashion and pop culture while doing everything one can to make sure a photo can stand the test of time. This push pull is also one of the most stimulating parts of shooting.
Many women over 50 feel invisible- I think the woman here is anything but.
That beauty and allure is ageless.
I’m still learning - can I get back to you?
I voraciously devour fashion media, movies and TV. Traveling has always been an inspiration as well as the cliche answer of being in nature. Planet Earth never ceases to astonish me.
There are way too many to mention. I couldn’t utter them out loud or put them down in writing - I wouldn’t want to jinx anything.
