Tina Kukina: Rustic Winter Wedding

CALEB SCHAFTLEIN,

Could you please provide us with a professional introduction about yourself and your photography work?

Full name Krystyna Kukina

Can you tell us about how you got started in photography?

Absolutely! I started my journey in 2017 when I first bought my camera. It was a simple Canon 1300D, which I still keep at home, but I don’t use it anymore. I began by taking photos of my friends and found some groups like “Models Calling” and “Models Needed.” Through those groups, I got my first unpaid clients, and later, paid ones—but with very minimal pay.

What was your passion driving you during your journey? Who or what prompted you to begin?

Well, I’ve always liked taking photos. While I was studying in Odesa, the city inspired me to capture its buildings, streets, and cars. However, I soon realized that those photos weren’t enough for me—I needed to start photographing people.

Could you walk us through your photoshoot planning process?

My photoshoot planning process is very collaborative and organized. First, we communicate through social media or schedule a call to discuss the details. Once we connect, I begin planning by selecting locations and discussing outfit ideas that best suit the concept.

I also send reference images to my clients to help them visualize the style, and they are welcome to share their own inspiration as well. If the shoot takes place in a studio, I handle the communication, check availability, and coordinate everything with the client.

Once all the details are set, we finalize and book a date for the shoot!

Where do you get your ideas for photoshoots?

Instagram feed, Accounts with foreign photographers, Pinterest.

What are the most important components of an extraordinary photograph, in your opinion?

An extraordinary photograph combines strong composition, captivating lighting, and genuine emotion. It tells a story, evokes feelings, and connects with the viewer. A compelling subject, technical skill, and a unique perspective make the image stand out. When these elements come together, a photograph becomes more than just a picture—it becomes art.

How do other artists influence your work? Are there any other photographers you look up to? Who?

Dima Maley is my forever inspiration. His photography speaks to me on a deep level, and I admire the way he captures emotions and tells stories through his images.

What are your top tips for aspiring photographers on skill development and finding their own creative voice? How did you develop yours?

First, don’t compare yourself to other photographers. Instead, find inspiration in their work and incorporate elements into your own. Develop your eye for creating something beautiful. Practice: the more you shoot, the more you’ll understand your camera and the art of photography. Experiment with different styles, techniques, and subjects to discover what resonates with you.

What is your favorite piece of work you've ever shot?

Yes! In love with photos I did at Art Institute in Chicago with a couple: instagram.com/p/DFnr3HLNn_2/?img_index=1

Also, one of my favorite photos are made in New York: instagram.com/p/DBmE6YLtg0A/?img_index=1

Can you tell me about an upcoming project you're working on and the idea behind it?

Right now, I’m working on a photo session I recently had in downtown Chicago—capturing the wedding of a beautiful couple. We took photos at a hotel, City Hall, and various streets downtown, including the Chicago Board of Trade Building and near the Cadillac Palace Theatre. I’m also excited about an upcoming photo session for a dress brand that I’ll be doing with a stunning model.

Can you tell us the story behind creating the photographs you submitted?

Absolutely! I was scrolling through Threads when I came across a post saying, 'Looking for content creators to join our chat group.' I sent them a message, and they added me to the group. Then, I found a profile of Tori, a model who organizes events for photographers and creators in the wedding theme. She invited me to join their upcoming event in Milwaukee. My friend, who is a florist, and I attended the event, where we began creating photos.
