Zachariah Hagy: beauty is breathless

Could you walk us through your photoshoot planning process? The approach I take for a shoot really depends on whether it’s for work or purely for enjoyment. In this instance, it was all about having fun. I usually kick things off by seeking inspiration, and once I have a clear vision, I create a mood board using references from Pinterest. The overall tone and feel of the shoot significantly influence my choice of talent. Once I have the right person on board, the process becomes a natural collaboration between them, my partner, and me.

As a photography expert, what sets your work apart from other photographers? What sets my work apart is my unique perspective and personal taste. That's what I cherish most about this art form. Even when I draw inspiration from other creatives, I find it almost impossible to replicate their work because I perceive things through my own lens. My artistic vision and what resonates with me are distinctly different, allowing me to create something truly original.

What are the most important components of an extraordinary photograph, in your opinion? For me, lighting is absolutely essential; it's the foundation of everything I create. The way light is shaped and directed can transform an entire scene. While talent, makeup artistry, wardrobe, and other elements are undeniably important, great lighting gives you the power to manipulate and enhance any aspect of a shoot to achieve the desired effect.

How do you strike a balance between your artistic expression and your client's expectations during a shoot? For client work I always go into the shoot with the idea in mind that as much as I want to control it creatively there is a good chance that will not happen. So knowing that I always make time to shoot some images for my own portfolio. Still keeping the client and agency in mind as the priority if I can walk away with 5-10 images that I really wanted to get thats a win for me.
